Written for this project in response to the historical record below. It is not a historical claim and is never presented as one.
The cords are the detail. Each bier connects to its own bell, and the bells are mounted where an attendant sitting at the far end of the hall would hear which one had rung. A society that builds this has decided, at municipal expense, that the boundary is unreliable. No bell in any European waiting mortuary is recorded as having rung for the reason it was installed. The Entity here is not a returning body. It is the institution of waiting itself, which was funded, staffed and rostered for decades.

Waiting mortuaries were built across German-speaking Europe from the 1790s in response to a genuine and widespread fear of premature burial, at a time when the medical determination of death was unreliable enough to make the fear reasonable. They were closed once that determination improved.
This record has not passed verification. Nobody has yet opened the source page, confirmed that the image, artist, year, collection and institution match it, or confirmed that the digital reproduction, not merely the underlying work, is free of restriction.
