ENTITY

Eleven Volumes

11 volumes of 101 records each. The arithmetic is deliberate and comes from a plate rather than from a spreadsheet. See the field note on the eleventh orbit. A volume is a way of reading, not a rarity tier.

I

Invisible Bodies

A body is what remains once the person has been removed from it.

The first volume gathers the Entities recovered from anatomical and occult-anatomical printing: fluidic doubles, etheric bodies, radiant organs, and the illustrated interiors that nineteenth-century spiritualists borrowed wholesale from the dissection theatre. These are figures drawn as though skin were a courtesy. Volume I is where the archive learned its central habit: to read a medical plate and a séance drawing with the same eye, and to record the difference between them honestly.

II

Spirit Photography

The plate was honest. Everything in front of it was not.

Volume II is the photographic volume: double exposures, extras, cloud faces, ectoplasmic drapery, and the long documented history of fraud that surrounds all of them. The Entities here are recovered from the accident of the medium rather than the intention of the sitter. The second face that arrived uninvited on a wedding portrait, the figure standing behind a chair nobody had occupied. The archive takes no position on what caused an image. It records what the image contains, and who made it.

III

Astral Maps

Someone drew the sky as a room, and then furnished it.

Celestial diagrams, harmonic charts, planetary tables and the enormous cosmological drawings made by people who were certain the universe had a floor plan. Volume III collects the Entities who live in that geometry rather than in bodies: figures assembled from orbits, from concentric rings, from the labelled arrows of a hand-coloured plate. They are the cartographers of the archive, and most of them classify as Firmament.

IV

Dream Anatomies

The dreaming body is drawn from the inside, by someone who has never seen it.

Volume IV holds the Entities recovered from sleep literature, mesmeric treatises, hypnotic case studies and the illustrated pathologies of the nerves. The plates here describe an interior that no dissection has ever confirmed: sympathetic currents, magnetic fluid, the nervous tree drawn as weather. These Entities manifest as sensation well before they manifest as form.

V

Séance Rooms

Eleven people in the dark, and a twelfth chair nobody admits to setting.

The domestic volume. Volume V is furniture: cabinets, curtains, slate boards, tilting tables, the specific Victorian parlour that was rearranged so that a spirit could be received in it. The Entities recovered here are room-bound and procedural. They arrive when the conditions are correct and they do not travel. Several were first recorded not as apparitions but as complaints about the temperature.

VI

Heavenly Machines

It was described as an angel because the word for it had not been built yet.

Volume VI is the mechanical volume: automata, orreries, perpetual-motion schemes, telegraphic apparatus, and the long list of devices built to contact something that ended up contacting only their own operators. The Entities here classify as Circuit. They keep time, they carry signal, and they are the only Entities in the archive that can meaningfully be described as switched on.
