The Eleventh Orbit, and Where 1,111 Came From
A note on the arithmetic of the archive: eleven volumes, a hundred and one records each, and the unlabelled ring that suggested both.
The Archive
The supply is 1,111 because the structure is eleven volumes of a hundred and one records, and the structure is that because of a single copperplate from 1798 with an orbit on it that nobody named.
A hundred and one is not a hundred. The odd record is the one that does not pair off, does not sit symmetrically in a grid, and cannot be split evenly between two collectors. Every volume in this archive has one, and Volume XI is a hundred and one of them: the drawer that exists so the other drawers can stay honest.
Against the round number
Ten thousand is a supply chosen by a spreadsheet. It carries no information about the thing being counted. The arithmetic here is meant to be legible from the object: eleven, because of the ring; a hundred and one, because a catalogue that divides evenly is a catalogue that has been rounded; and the total falls out of the two rather than being picked first and justified afterwards.
Something was worth forty-one bearings. The plate does not contain it. The plate contains the effort.
That is also the thesis, and it is why this project sits on a chain at all. Everything valuable begins invisibly: belief, memory, attention, labour, fear, desire. Markets are extremely good at measuring the visible consequence and completely silent about the cause. The archive collects the causes. The ledger records who is currently holding one.
The record that cannot be read
ENTITY 1011 opens Volume XI and is abraded to bare paper. Its Classification fields are assertions about an image nobody can see, and the record says so in the open. Keeping it is the point. An archive that only retains the legible is not an archive of its subject; it is an archive of its own convenience.
