Written for this project in response to the historical record below. It is not a historical claim and is never presented as one.
Reference numerals run from 1 to 41 and describe every component: the horn, the diaphragm, the needle arm, the clockwork, the paper drum. There is no 7. There is, however, a small unlabelled cylinder between 6 and 8, drawn in full, hatched for brass, and connected to both. A patent draughtsman is paid by the numeral. Leaving one out is not an oversight; it is a decision, made by somebody, about something that was in the machine and was not going to be described.

The 1890s produced a long series of instruments intended to register phenomena below the threshold of the senses, and a great many of them were sincere. Patent specifications are unusually good sources because they are legal documents: exaggeration is expensive and omission is deliberate.
This record has not passed verification. Nobody has yet opened the source page, confirmed that the image, artist, year, collection and institution match it, or confirmed that the digital reproduction, not merely the underlying work, is free of restriction.
